Case Studies
BESS case studies connect a project challenge with the load, duration, controls and equipment that shaped the result.
National Telecom Tower BESS Rollout
A leading mobile network operator was spending $15M annually on diesel fuel for 500 tower sites across multiple regions, with 12% of fuel lost to theft and adulteration.
Phased deployment of solar-coupled BESS units at 200 sites, sized for 72 hours of autonomous tower operation. Each site received a 15-30 kWh LFP battery with 3-5 kW solar array.
- 85% reduction in fuel costs across deployed sites
- Fuel theft eliminated completely
- Network uptime improved from 97.2% to 99.6%
- Carbon emissions reduced by 4,800 tonnes/year
Manufacturing Facility Peak Demand Reduction
A steel processing facility with 800 kW peak demand was paying $180,000 annually in demand charges alone, with peaks occurring during two 90-minute production shifts.
A 600 kWh / 300 kW BESS was installed to cap grid demand at 500 kW. The system charges overnight at off-peak rates and discharges during production peaks.
- $65,000 annual demand charge savings
- Payback achieved in 3.8 years
- Grid connection upgrade deferred indefinitely
- Smooth, predictable load profile achieved
Regional Hospital Zero-Interruption Power
A 200-bed regional hospital experienced 47 grid outages per year, each requiring 30-60 second generator start-up during which ICU and operating theatre monitoring equipment lost power.
A 500 kWh / 250 kW BESS deployed as primary backup with existing generators retained as secondary backup. UPS-grade transfer time of <20ms ensures zero interruption.
- Zero critical load interruptions since deployment
- Generator fuel consumption reduced by 35%
- Annual maintenance costs reduced by $28,000
- Staff confidence in power reliability significantly improved
Remote Mining Operation Microgrid
A remote mining operation was spending $4M annually on diesel fuel for a 2 MW continuous load, with supply disruptions causing 30+ days of reduced operations per year.
A 3 MW solar array with 8 MWh BESS and 2 MW diesel backup configured as an autonomous microgrid with intelligent load management.
- Diesel consumption reduced by 72%
- Zero supply-related outages since deployment
- Annual energy cost reduced by $2.8M
- Carbon emissions reduced by 3,200 tonnes/year
Commercial Solar Self-Consumption Maximisation
A commercial warehouse with a 200 kWp solar array was exporting 55% of generation at low feed-in tariff rates while importing expensive grid power in the evening.
A 400 kWh BESS was added to capture daytime solar surplus and discharge during the 18:00-21:00 peak tariff window.
- Self-consumption increased from 45% to 91%
- Annual electricity savings increased by $54,000
- Payback on BESS achieved in 4.2 years
- Carbon emissions reduced by 45 tonnes/year
Tier III Data Centre UPS Replacement
A Tier III data centre experienced a 45-second UPS-to-generator transfer failure, resulting in $2.3M in lost revenue and SLA penalties. Traditional VRLA UPS batteries required replacement every 3-4 years.
A 2 MWh / 1 MW BESS with 2N redundancy replaced the existing UPS system, providing 4 hours of full-load backup with <4ms transfer time.
- Zero power interruptions in 24 months
- Generator runtime reduced by 90%
- Annual UPS maintenance costs reduced by 60%
- Sustainability targets met for hyperscale tenant
How to read BESS case studies
Use a case study to connect a site challenge with the operating requirements behind the system. Note the load, duration, control objective and equipment already on site before comparing it with your own project. Results depend on tariff structure, weather, duty cycle, maintenance and project scope. Prepare your utility bill and interval load data, then contact BX to test the assumptions against your facility.
Review the BESS guide and system platforms for related information.
Project information to bring to the next step
When reviewing a system, separate the outcome from the equipment list. A battery may be asked to deliver a short, high-power response, several hours of backup or a daily charge and discharge cycle. Those duties affect the usable energy, inverter rating, reserve state of charge and expected operating schedule.
Site conditions matter as well. Confirm the electrical service, available installation area, access for delivery, ambient temperature and the control signals the system must exchange with existing equipment. Include safety, maintenance and commissioning responsibilities in the project scope.
Good project information makes the next conversation more productive. Keep the source of each number, note assumptions that still need checking and identify the person who can provide missing records. BX can then outline the next engineering step without treating a generic example as a promise.
